TOP TEN: Fall 2018 Puzzles

Hello jigsaw enthusiasts! I'm very, very pleased to welcome September and the start of the Fall season, and I hope you are too. We've had a very hot and muggy summer here in Pennsylvania, so cooler weather will be a relief! Not to mention that Fall is my favorite time of year with the changing... Continue Reading →

Review: “Gobbler Farms” by Dona Gelsinger, Sunsout — 8.25/10

If you're looking for a fall or Thanksgiving-themed puzzle, you won't find one than embodies the mood more than "Gobbler Farms". I love the large turkeys and pumpkins in this image and the bright fall colors. This puzzle is oversized with very large pieces. It's the size of many 2000 piece puzzles when done. The Sunsout quality is good, but the gloss on the pieces made some of the turkey feather highlights hard to see when I did this puzzle at night under overhead lights. The final puzzle is impressive and would look good framed. Recommended.

“Ring-Necked Pheasants” by Linda Picken, Cobble Hill – 8.5/10

"Ring-Necked Pheasants" is a pretty wildlife puzzle with terrific fall colors. This Cobble Hill puzzle features large pieces that are sturdy, have a snug fit, and a glare-free linen finish. I really enjoyed working with the bigger pieces and they have a nice feeling in your hand. The image by Linda Picken is very peaceful and serene. The gold tones are bright and cheerful to work with. The puzzle is fairly easy due to its 500 piece size, but all the gold adds a touch of challenge. Recommended.

Review: “Autumn Traditions” by Terry Redlin, White Mountain 8.75/10

White Mountain's "Autumn Traditions" by Terry Redlin is a beautiful and nostalgic fall-themed puzzle that comes in 1000 pieces and 300 pieces so you can choose your level of difficulty. The 300 piece version is easy and crops out some of the more difficult sky. The 1000 piece version is easy around the country store and pumpkin patch, but moderate-to-difficult for the sky portion. The colors are very pretty and brighter than many Redlin puzzles. The quality is very good. I especially like White Mountain's larger piece size and very flat, smooth finish. This would be a lovely puzzle to frame. Recommended!

Review: “Red River Crossing” by Sam Timm, Sunsout – 8/10

Red River Crossing is a lovely fall-themed puzzle featuring gold-orange leaves, brightly-colored birds, and a peaceful covered bridge scene. It has easy sections and moderately difficult sections like the blue sky and dark green pine needles. The Sunsout quality is very good with thick, sturdy pieces, excellent color reproduction, and a fun random piece cut. The pieces are on the normal-to-large side and easy to hold. The art by Sam Timm is sure to get you in the mood for fall. Recommended.

Review: “Autumn Squirrel” by Mary Thompson — Sunsout, 9/10

I loved shaped puzzles and fall-themed puzzles, so this puzzle was extra fun to assemble. The image has lots of fall leaves, both large and small. It really puts me in the mood for crisp autumn days! The Sunsout quality is excellent with thick, sturdy pieces and a wonderful random cut and hangs together really well. The overall difficulty is moderate. Most of the puzzle is easy, despite the shaped border, but all the squirrel fur gives the puzzle a little more challenge at the end. Highly recommended.
