Heye 2018 catalogue now online

You can see the complete catalogue here: http://heye-puzzle.de/en/ There are lots of new photo and cat puzzles besides the cartoon and fantasy images I posted in my Heye 2018 preview. Unfortunately the online catalogue is low res and so we still have relatively small images of the puzzles. We should have the new Heye puzzles in stock at Puzzle Warehouse by end of January. I’ll post when they’re in! JJ  Read more

At Puzzle Warehouse, we should have the new Heye puzzlesRead more

Review: “Cats in Paris” by Sven Hartmann, Heye – 8.75/10

“Cats in Paris” by Sven Hartmann is a moderately difficult puzzle from Heye. The cats in the foreground are all unique and you can figure out where the pieces go by comparing them to the large poster that’s included. The sky, cityscape, and gargoyle areas of the puzzle are more of a challenge to put together, though the strong color variation in the sky keeps it from being tedious. There’s lot of interesting details to discover, French cliches and tropes the cats act out. As always, the Heye quality is outstanding with sturdy pieces, a matte finish, and a wide variety of grid-cut piece shapes. If you like cats or have a fondness for Paris, you’ll enjoy this one.Read more

Review: “Cat’s Life” by Marino Degano, Heye – 9.75/10

“Cat’s Life” is terrific fun and a perfect example of the awesomeness of cartoon puzzles from Heye. It’s a fairly easy puzzle to assemble. Despite the large body of the cat and the green background, there are unique little characters (fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes, among others) that inhabit every inch of the brilliant composition by cartoonist Marino Degano. Each little critter has a unique outfit, expression, or action, and you can match your pieces against the large poster that comes in the box. There are many joke and puns and pure silliness to discover as you assemble this puzzle.Read more

Review: “Swans” by Cris Ortega — Heye, 9.5/10

“Swans” is gorgeous gothic fantasy puzzle from Heye and artist Cris Ortega. The puzzle is moderately difficult but fun to assemble with its bright reds, greens, and blues. The puzzle comes in a collectible box and has that solid Heye German-board-game quality from start to finish. The puzzle is grid cut, but there’s a wide variety of shapes, and I never had trouble thinking a piece fit where it didn’t really go. The pieces are thick and sturdy and have a nice matte finish. This is one you might consider framing when you’re done. It’s been in print since 2012, thanks to its popularity, but pick it up before it is retired. Many other Cris Ortega puzzles are now quite pricey on ebay. Highly recommended!Read more

Artist Retrospective: Jean-Jacques Loup

LOUP WEEK: This week at Jigsaw Junkies we’re featuring one of my favorite puzzle artists, Jean-Jacques Loup  He made puzzle images for Heye from the 1970’s up until his recent death in 2015. Loup has published at least 59 unique puzzles and many have been reissued in whole or in a smaller subset of the original image. Our reviews this week are of “Ballooning” and “Castle of Horror” (it is almost Halloween, isn’t it?) This weekend, we’ll have a retrospective of Loup puzzles from the early days toRead more

Review: “Castle of Horror” by Jean-Jacques Loup, Heye, 9.75/10

“Castle of Horror” is an absolute masterpiece of a puzzle. The art by Jean-Jacques Loup is outstanding. Dozens of scary movie tropes are included in this image in a humorous way, from Frankenstein to ghosts, witches, and vampires. This is a moderately difficult puzzle, mostly due to its size, so prepare to buckle in and enjoy a long puzzling experience. There are dozens of funny scenarios going on around the puzzle, which you’ll discover as you assemble it. The Heye quality is good with a gorgeous triangular box, large poster, thick and sturdy pieces, and excellent image reproduction. This is a grid-cut puzzle with a good variety of piece shapes. This puzzle was originally produced in 2003 and was out of print for a number of years. Don’t miss a chance to get this classic while it’s back in print. Highly recommended!Read more

Review: “Ballooning” by Jean-Jacques Loup, Heye, 9/10

Heye’s “Cartoon Classics” line reissues some of their best loved cartoon puzzles from the 70’s-90’s. This delightful image from famous French cartoonist Jean-Jacques Loup is a breeze to put together. The large balloons and the buildings in the image go together quickly. There are a myriad of cute and funny characters in the scene, each with unique clothing and expressions that help you figure out what piece goes where. Heye is a German brand with overall excellent quality. Highly recommended.Read more
